The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Bayelsa State Chapter, has once again demonstrated its commitment in promoting female participation in engineering, by sponsoring 35 female students to write the 2026 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

The initiative, aimed at increasing the number of female engineers in Nigeria, saw APWEN BAYELSA purchase JAMB forms for the students, who had expressed interest in studying engineering at the university level.

The students, selected from various local government areas in Bayelsa State, were registered for the JAMB exams and will pursue various engineering courses.

Speaking on the initiative, the Chairman of APWEN BAYELSA, Engr. Amalate Ann-Jonathan Obuebite Ph.D. FNSE revealed that this is the second edition of the program, which aligns with the association’s objective of enhancing female participation in engineering.

We are thrilled to see the growing interest in engineering among female students in Bayelsa State, she said.

“Last year, we had 18 candidates, and this year, 35. It’s a significant increase, and we’re committed to continuing this initiative”

Engr. Amalate Ann-Jonathan Obuebite Ph.D. FNSE also announced that APWEN BAYELSA members will serve as mentors to the sponsored students throughout their five-year university education, providing guidance and support as they navigate their engineering studies.

The sponsored students expressed their gratitude to APWEN BAYELSA for the opportunity, promising to excel in their studies and make the association proud.

“We are truly grateful for this support,” said one of the students. “We promise to work hard and become successful engineers.”

This initiative underscores APWEN BAYELSA’s dedication to empowering female students and promote engineering education in Nigeria.

The association’s efforts are expected to inspire more female students to pursue careers in engineering and contribute to the country’s development.
