Standard Times Nigeria on Wednesday learnt that, in Kogi State, a pall of grief hangs over communities after six persons living with disabilities were killed and 13 others injured in a devastating road crash along the Lokoja–Okene highway. The tragedy struck on Wednesday, shortly after the victims departed Lokoja, where they had taken part in events marking the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the Government House.
Authorities confirmed that the injured survivors are receiving treatment in multiple health facilities across the state.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, described the crash as “heartbreaking,” calling it a tragedy that has plunged the entire state into mourning.
“This tragedy has brought profound sorrow to the Government and people of Kogi State,” Fanwo said in an official statement. “We mourn deeply with the families of the deceased and extend our heartfelt condolences during this painful and devastating moment. The loss of any Kogite is a loss to us all.”
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has ordered the state government to assume full responsibility for the medical care of all survivors until their complete recovery. State officials have been dispatched to hospitals to monitor treatment and offer support to the victims and their families.
Fanwo urged citizens to pray for the repose of the departed and for the swift healing of the injured.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), noting the fatal crash coincides with the busy Yuletide travel season, renewed its warnings against overspeeding and dangerous overtaking—behaviors officials say are responsible for a significant number of holiday-period road fatalities.
As investigations continue, Kogi State joins the nation in mourning a loss described by officials as a “state tragedy of devastating magnitude.”
