FCT Minister, Wike moves against land use violations

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated two ad-hoc committees to address land use violations and other issues in the Abuja, the FCT. The committees will review controversies surrounding River Park Estate and land use/purpose clauses of land properties at locations overtaken by commercial and other activities.

This latest development was contained in a press release from Rabi Musa Umar, the Assistant Director Press, Office of the Minister over the weekend.

According to the release, the committees was given a two-week timeframe to review the issues and submit recommendations, and the committee on River Park Estate will investigate reported violations of agreements between the FCT Administration and developers.The Committee on Land Uses/Purpose Clauses will identify properties with illegal land use conversions and recommend appropriate actions.

In addition the Minister emphasized the need for professionalism, impartiality, and timely completion of the assignment, even as he directed relevant departments to provide a comprehensive list of defaulters on ground rent payments for enforcement.

The objectives the development, the release went on, was to streamline FCT Administration’s services and restore order to the city’s development, address land use violations and ensure compliance with the Abuja master plan, and generate revenue from outstanding ground rent to fund critical infrastructure projects.

However, the expected outcomes of everything was robust recommendations from the committees, identification of defaulters on ground rent payments, and enforcement of land use regulations and revenue generation for infrastructure development.
