It was a moment of elegance, history, and profound honor as the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Standard-Times Newspaper, Mr. Ayo Fadimu, was formally inducted into the prestigious Abeokuta Sports Club in a grand ceremony that drew together traditional rulers, dignitaries, professionals, and cultural custodians from all over Ogun State and beyond.
Held at the Sir Kesington Adebutu Legacy Hall of the club’s serene premises, the event marked not only the welcoming of Mr. Fadimu but also the formal admission of 32 other eminent Abeokuta, collectively dubbed the “T33” into the historic club.
The Abeokuta Sports Club, founded in 1904 as a leisure hub for colonial officials, stands today as the oldest social club in West Africa, steeped in tradition and distinguished by a legacy of excellence.
Mr. Fadimu’s induction is widely seen as a recognition of his professional achievements and societal contributions through journalism. His leadership at Standard-Times Newspaper has been consistently celebrated for championing factual reporting, fostering informed discourse, and upholding media integrity in Nigeria’s dynamic information landscape.
In his brief remarks at the ceremony, Mr. Fadimu expressed deep appreciation for the honor. “Being inducted into this historic institution is not just a personal milestone but also a call to service,” he said.
“The Abeokuta Sports Club has, for over a century, stood as a beacon of elite social and civic engagement. I am honored to join such a revered tradition and look forward to contributing my quota through the power of the press and responsible journalism.”
The President of the Abeokuta Sports Club, Prince (Dr.) Seni Ogunyemi, in his induction address, highlighted the club’s recent milestones under his leadership. In line with the administration’s manifesto “For Members’ Benefit,” he detailed achievements including the total renovation of chalets, upgrading of biometric security systems, the commissioning of a new canteen, and the continued hosting of sporting tournaments.

The Alake, known for his unwavering attendance at all club inductions, praised Chief Kesington Adebutu for his invaluable support to the club and reflected on the deep historical ties he shares with Abeokuta Sports Club and other elite circles nationwide. “This club is not just a place of leisure, it is a sanctuary of legacy, service, and shared values,” Alake remarked.
Also in attendance were the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, and the Oba of Orile-Imo, among other revered monarchs and royal dignitaries, lending the ceremony a profound cultural prestige.
