Prevalent rate of Female Genital Mutilation dropped by 54 percent in Ebonyi State

The Wife of the Governor,  Chief Mrs Mary-maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru has stated during a Road work to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation and cutting.

Said” The prevalent rate of Female Genital Mutilation has dropped to 54 percent in Ebonyi.

The event was Organised by the pet project of the wife of the Governor, Better Health for Rural Women Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO), in collaboration with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in the state.

During the Road Work to mark the commemoration of the event,  the wife of Governor’s wife, who was represented by the Team Leader BERWO Prof. Nkechi Echiegu, said the cultural menace had reduced drastically.

Mrs Nwifuru while speaking on the theme: “Stepping up the Pace Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to end FGM.

She called on the traditional Rulers, Stakeholders, and Birth attendants to work collectively to achieve zero tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.

The Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwankpuma, represented by her Head of Department, Mrs. Roseline Orji, said that a joint alliance with Community and Religious leaders would assist in the reduction of Female Genital Mutilation.

UNFPA representative Kosarachi Nwite and the coordinator of the Gender-Based Violence Taskforce, Mrs. Faithvin Nwanchor, promised their commitment to ensuring its continuous decline as several violations of human rights affect women and girls.

Offenders of this ill-treated cultural menace have been advised to desist to avoid being trapped by the State Violence Against Persons Prohibition law.
