The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, has assured members of the opposition that they would not be abandoned after what she described as the party’s victory in the 2027 general elections.
Kolapo gave the assurance while addressing members and stakeholders of the PDP at the Ijemo Zone meeting in Ward 5, Abeokuta South Local Government Area, held at the weekend.
She said the apprehension among opposition members was understandable, but argued that politics in Ogun State had moved beyond personal interests and should now focus on addressing the hardship faced by residents.
According to her, PDP members would not allow political differences to destroy the relationships that exist among the people of the state, stressing that the party would remain committed to the welfare of residents even after the election.
“We want to assure our brothers and sisters in the opposition, who know the truth but are running helter-skelter to protect their ‘soup pots’, that they will still be able to eat after we must have thrashed them at the polls.
“We will not allow politics to break the bond between the true sons and daughters of Ogun State. We know that when the chips are down, the strangers that they are selling now because of their pockets will abandon them, but we will never do so. So, they’ll come round,” she said.
Kolapo, who is the Iya Sunnah of Egbaland, said her relationship with the people of Egbaland existed long before her entry into politics, assuring that their welfare would continue to be a priority.
She urged residents to support PDP candidates contesting the National Assembly and Ogun State House of Assembly seats in the 2027 elections.
Also speaking, the Deputy Chairman of the PDP in Ogun State, Biodun Ogunremi, charged party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation through door-to-door campaigns ahead of the election.
Ogunremi said the growing hardship faced by Nigerians had increased support for the opposition, claiming that voters across Ogun State were ready for political change.
“The masses are tired of pain and they are with us. In the Central, we have the Deputy Governor and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo. That is what is giving them headache,” he said.
The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council, Mustapha Owolabi, also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, describing the 2027 election as a “done deal” for the PDP.
Owolabi maintained that voters in Ogun Central and other parts of the state were prepared to support the party and its candidates at the polls.
