Niger legislators to collaborate with their Kaduna counterpart to end banditry

TUNDE BOLAJI -MINNA.

The Niger State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm of government to collaborate with the Kaduna State Government to address the rising banditry, especially along the border areas between the two states.

This was the resolution of the house made during the Assembly’s 123rd plenary session held on February 5, 2025.

The motion, titled “Calling on the executive arm of Niger State Government to protect communities under Rafi Local Government Area,” was raised by Hon. Zubairu Ismail Zannah, representing Rafi Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Abdulmalik Bala Yakubu of Katcha.

Hon. Zannah revealed that bandits had abducted 122 people and killed two within a month in Rafi Local Government Area.

He noted that communities like Pandogari, Wowo, Gidigori, Ringa, and Kawu were most affected, suffering displacement, economic hardship, and agricultural destruction.

The house noticed that the resurgence of banditry in Niger State, particularly in Rafi, Munya, and Shiroro LGAs, has been linked to Kaduna State’s intensified crackdown on bandits, which pushed them into Niger.

The Assembly urged swift action, including collaboration with Kaduna State, increased federal security presence along major routes, and further engagement with the Federal Government.

Hon. Isah Abdullahi of Kontagora I also requested the clerk to promptly inform the executive arm of any urgent matters. Additionally, Hon. Abu Gomna of Bosso Constituency proposed inviting the commissioner of internal security to provide updates.
