Security operatives demolish Ibom Youth Council headquarters, arrest three suspects
A joint security team, acting on the directive of Governor Umo Eno, has dismantled the operational headquarters of the proscribed Ibom Youth Council in Ikot Isighe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
The move follows the governor’s recent ban on the group and a mandate to security agencies to curtail its activities.
During the operation, which was based on credible intelligence, members of the group fled the scene, but three suspects were apprehended. The building, identified as the group’s headquarters, was subsequently demolished by the security forces.
Authorities revealed that the group had been stockpiling arms, conducting military training, and carrying out attacks on security formations and private property.
Investigations indicate that the group planned to instigate widespread unrest in the state towards the end of the year, aiming to prolong the disorder into 2025.
In a statement, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Akwa Ibom’s status as the most peaceful state in Nigeria. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities. Landlords were also warned to verify tenants thoroughly, as property used for illegal activities would be demolished, with owners held accountable as accomplices.
Governor Eno assured residents of their safety during the festive season, emphasizing that security agencies are on high alert to protect lives and property.
