Senate leader lists 30 states backing state police, says six more to go before Nov 15

By; Ekunkonye Junio, Abuja.

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Wednesday told the Senate that only six State Houses of Assembly are yet to submit their resolutions on State Police.

Bamidele said 30 Houses have already approved the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution for establishment of State Police Services.

He made the disclosure at plenary while reading out the names of approving states to put on record the level of support for the Bill.

According to him, the Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly received resolutions from the 30 states, confirming broad endorsement.

The 30 states are Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

Bamidele noted that the Constitution requires approval of at least two-thirds, which is 24 states, before the Bill can be transmitted for presidential assent.

He explained that the National Assembly has passed the Bill, and the next stage is state approval, followed by assent by the President.

He said the Clerk communicated the Bill to the 36 Houses on October 15, 2026, with a 30-day window ending November 15, 2026 for deliberation and response.

He expressed confidence that the remaining six states would complete approval within stipulated period, and urged them not to be left out.

He warned that Houses that fail to respond before deadline could face consequences, but did not elaborate on what the consequences would entail.
