Nigeria’s move to create State Police has received major boost as 28 State Houses of Assembly have endorsed the Constitution Amendment Bill.
Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, Esq., made the disclosure in a press release issued on Tuesday, 3rd November 2026.
He said the Bill seeking to provide for establishment of State Police Services and related matters was transmitted on 16 September 2026 to all 36 State Assemblies.
The Bill sought approval within 30 days, which ended on 15 October 2026, but the Clerk said reports will still be accepted until transmission for presidential assent.
Ogunlana confirmed that verified reports show 28 States have approved, exceeding the Section 9 threshold of not less than two-thirds, equivalent to 24 States.
He explained that necessary administrative verification of reports and accompanying Votes and Proceedings was done to ensure authenticity.
He clarified that Section 9 of the Constitution does not expressly prescribe a Third Reading for a Constitution Alteration Bill, unlike ordinary Bills.
The National Assembly appreciated the cooperation of State Assemblies, saying the amendment represents significant step in strengthening security and deepening federal system.
