Spain came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in Split on Tuesday, with Mikel Merino scoring twice to complete the comeback and confirm the reigning champions’ place in the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League quarter-finals.
Croatia took the lead through Ivan Perišić in the 17th minute, but Spain responded after the break as Merino equalised in the 61st minute.
Merino then struck again in the 88th minute to complete Spain’s turnaround and secure all three points for the visitors.
Martín Zubimendi provided the assist for the winner, lifting the ball into the box for Merino, who brought it down before firing past Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković.
Croatia were reduced to 10 men in the 79th minute when Perišić was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Marc Cucurella.
The dismissal was confirmed following a VAR review.
Despite Croatia creating several opportunities and putting Spain under pressure for long periods, the visitors produced a strong second-half response to extend their winning run.
Spain’s victory also confirmed their qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals.
Croatia had appeared on course for a famous victory after Perišić gave them the lead, but Spain’s second-half pressure eventually turned the game in their favour.
