Lagos partner Federal Ministry of Power on 6,000 MW power supply

Lagos State Government has forged a partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power to address its over 6,000 megawatts (MW) electricity demand and achieve a more reliable and sustainable power supply towards 24-hour electricity.

The state government utter this at the Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), held with the Federal Government and key stakeholders in the power sector in Lagos.

Speaking at the retreat, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, usher the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, as stakeholders deliberated on challenges affecting electricity supply in the state and measures to address them.

Sanwo-Olu said achieving the state’s electricity needs would require increased investment in embedded and off-grid generation, improved transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as a regulatory framework that addresses the peculiar needs of Lagos.

According to him, the Federal Electricity Act 2023 and the Lagos Electricity Law 2024 have provided the legal backing for the state to tackle grid bottlenecks and secure improved gas supply for power generation.

He said the state government was behold to building a more reliable electricity market capable of supporting residents and businesses, while moving Lagos towards 24-hour power supply.

The governor also acknowledged the commitment of federal agencies and stakeholders, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

He stressed that the ultimate measure of the initiatives would be the impact on Lagos residents and businesses through improved reliability of electricity supply.
