The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration to repositioning the education sector, declaring that education remains a top priority of the state government.
In a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Friday Aghedo, Idahosa stated at the 12th National Annual Dinner and Secondary School Auditorium Launch Appeal Fund organised by the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA).
Speaking on the theme of the keynote address, “From Legacy to Global Relevance: Transforming Government College Ughelli through Strategic Partnerships, Alumni Engagement and Artificial Intelligence,” delivered by Prof. Douglason Omotor, the Deputy Governor said Edo State had a compelling story to tell in the area of education.
Idahosa explained that the Okpebholo administration had continued to leverage its SHINE Agenda to strengthen the education sector and create an enabling environment for teaching and learning across the state.
According to him, one of the administration’s early interventions upon assumption of office was the recruitment of 5,000 teachers into the state’s education system, underscoring the governor’s commitment to improving the quality of education in Edo.
“Education is a priority to the Edo State Government,” Idahosa declared, stressing that the administration would continue to pursue policies and programmes capable of improving the sector and securing a brighter future for Edo children.
The Deputy Governor also commended GCUOBA for its commitment to the development of Government College Ughelli, describing the contributions of the institution and its alumni as worthy of commendation.
He noted that the school had produced eminent personalities who had distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavour, attributing the achievements to the values of excellence, discipline and leadership inculcated in its students.
Idahosa said the GCUOBA initiative was a demonstration of the important role alumni associations could play in complementing government’s efforts in the development of educational institutions.
He urged other old students’ associations and stakeholders to emulate GCUOBA by investing in their alma mater and contributing to the transformation of the education sector.
The Deputy Governor also linked the administration’s education policy to its broader governance agenda, noting that the government’s efforts in improving security had created a more conducive environment for residents, businesses and educational institutions.
He disclosed that the administration’s security interventions had significantly reduced crime indices in the state, describing the development as part of the broader foundation being laid by the Okpebholo administration for sustainable development.
The event brought together old students, educationists, government officials and other stakeholders to celebrate the legacy of Government College Ughelli and raise support for the development of its infrastructure.
