UCL: Fenerbahçe, Roma settle for 1-1 draw in league-stage opener

Fenerbahçe and AS Roma began their Champions League league-stage campaigns with a 1-1 draw on Thursday after neither side could find a late winner.

Roma took control of the contest shortly before half-time when Bryan Cristante broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Fenerbahçe returned from the break with greater attacking intent and were rewarded six minutes into the second half.

Greenwood found the equaliser in the 51st minute, bringing the Turkish side back into the contest and setting up a tense final period.

The goal raised the intensity of the encounter, with both teams becoming increasingly physical as they searched for the winning strike.

Fenerbahçe created several openings, with Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Mert Müldür among those involved as the hosts continued to apply pressure.

Roma also remained a threat on the break, with Cristante continuing to influence proceedings after scoring the opening goal.

However, neither side managed to produce the crucial second goal despite the late pressure.

The match became increasingly heated in the closing stages, with several players receiving bookings, but both defences stood firm to preserve the 1-1 scoreline.

The result means Fenerbahçe and Roma each take one point from their opening Champions League league-stage fixture.
