The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has installed and presented the Staff of Office to the new Olopeji of Opeji in Odeda Local Government Area, Oba Ganiyu Adesina, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions as key partners in grassroots governance and community development.
The governor said the presentation of the staff of office underscored his administration’s determination to reposition traditional institutions in recognition of their strategic role in promoting peace, driving development and serving as a bridge between the government and the people.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, Abiodun said the monarch’s appointment was in line with the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, as well as the customs and traditions of the Opeji community.
He reminded the new monarch of the limits of his traditional authority, stressing that as a Coronet Oba, his jurisdiction is restricted to Opeji town. The governor cautioned him against appointing Baales in other communities, noting that such powers fall outside the scope of his office.
Abiodun also commended the people of Opeji for maintaining peace and unity throughout the process that led to the elevation of the traditional stool to Obaship status. He urged residents to continue supporting the monarch in order to accelerate the socio-economic development of the community.
In separate goodwill messages, the Baale of Opeji, Chief Oseni Fasiu, and the Asiwaju Iyalode of Opeji, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adewuyi, described Oba Adesina as a compassionate, selfless and visionary leader. They credited him with contributing significantly to the community’s development even before ascending the throne and expressed confidence that his reign would attract more development projects.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Adesina thanked God and Governor Abiodun for the opportunity to serve his people. He pledged to lead with humility, fairness and dedication, assuring residents of an inclusive reign free from bias or favouritism.
The monarch also appealed to sons and daughters of Opeji, both at home and in the diaspora, to support his reign, saying collective efforts would be crucial to achieving sustained growth and development in the community.
