Students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Tuesday staged a protest following the killing of a female Higher National Diploma (HND II) Marketing student during an armed robbery attack in Eruku Community, a residential area behind the institution.
The aggrieved students blocked the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for several hours, causing a major traffic gridlock and leaving hundreds of commuters and motorists stranded. They demanded immediate intervention by the Ogun State Government and security agencies to address what they described as the worsening insecurity around the institution.
The protesters alleged that students are frequently attacked and robbed by suspected criminals while travelling to and from the school, lamenting that repeated appeals for improved security in the area had yielded little or no result.
According to the students, the overnight attack targeted hostels located behind the institution in Eruku Community. They said the deceased, a final year Marketing student, was shot during the invasion, while several other students sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals.
One of the protesting students said the attacks had become a recurring nightmare for residents of the community, noting that the hostels where the incident occurred are situated just behind the campus.
He also added that report was also been made severally to the Baale of the Eruku Community, which they cliamed “he did nothing to secure their safety”.
