Residents of Ikot Essen Akpan Ntuen in Ikpa Ikono Clan, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have commended the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South, Ekong Sampson, for interventions aimed at improving access to safe water and boosting rural development.

The community gave the commendation during the commissioning and handover of a solar-powered water project facilitated by the lawmaker, describing it as a major step toward addressing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) challenges in the area.

Represented by Hon. Afia Amos, Senator Sampson said the initiative was designed to provide clean, potable water and reduce the health risks associated with unsafe water sources. He urged residents to take ownership of the facility, stressing that proper maintenance and protection against vandalism are key to sustaining the project.

The intervention comes at a critical time when many rural communities continue to face limited access to safe drinking water, a situation that contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases and undermines public health outcomes.

Community leaders noted that the solar-powered scheme would not only improve hygiene practices but also reduce the burden on women and children who often travel long distances in search of water.

The water project complements the ongoing construction of the Ibekwe–Ikot Unya–Ekpuk Road, a strategic link expected to enhance access, improve livelihoods, and support economic activities across Ikpa Ikono and neighbouring communities.

During an earlier inspection of the road, Senator Sampson commended Umo Eno for approving the project, describing it as critical infrastructure that will unlock the socioeconomic potential of the area.

Speaking at the event, the Village Head, Eteidung Nse Emmanson, described the dual interventions as transformative, noting that access to clean water is fundamental to community health and development.

Youth leaders, including the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mkpat Enin Chapter, Comrade Idongesit Umoetuk, also applauded the lawmaker for prioritizing people-oriented projects, particularly those addressing basic needs such as water supply.

Residents expressed optimism that the improved access to safe water would promote better sanitation practices, reduce disease outbreaks, and contribute to overall community wellbeing.

The project aligns with broader efforts to strengthen WASH outcomes in rural Akwa Ibom, reinforcing the link between infrastructure development, public health, and sustainable livelihoods.
