The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dissolved the Executive Council of its Ogun State Joint Campus Council (JCC) over alleged constitutional violations and growing factional disputes, announcing a 30-day timeline for fresh elections.
The decision, according to a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja and signed by NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, followed what the association described as a “thorough, impartial and constitutionally guided investigation” into a wave of petitions and counter-petitions surrounding the council’s leadership.
NANS attributed the lingering crisis to “constitutional misinterpretation, administrative inconsistencies and rising factional tendencies,” warning that the situation had escalated into a full-blown constitutional impasse threatening unity and effective coordination within the student body in Ogun State.
While affirming that the dissolved chairman was legitimately elected in February 2025 without any formal electoral challenge, the national secretariat faulted the leadership for exceeding its constitutionally approved 12 month tenure. It noted that the council had entered a three month transition window that was already nearing expiration without adherence to laid down procedures.
The association further accused the leadership of failing to convene a mandatory pre-convention senate meeting and neglecting to constitute a convention planning committee ahead of the transition period actions it described as clear procedural breaches.
Beyond these lapses, NANS cited a “persistent lack of cooperation, divisive conduct and activities capable of fuelling factionalisation” as reasons for its decisive intervention.
With the dissolution taking immediate effect, stakeholders were directed to disregard any actions or decisions taken by the outgoing executives.
To restore order, NANS announced the constitution of a transition committee to oversee the council’s affairs pending fresh elections. The committee is chaired by the Vice President (Inter-Campus Affairs), Akinbodunse Praise, with the National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa, serving as secretary. Other members include officials from the South-West zone and selected Students’ Union Government presidents across tertiary institutions in Ogun State.
The committee has been mandated to conduct elections within 30 days in strict compliance with the NANS constitution, with the association stressing that the process must be transparent, credible and fair.
Describing the directive as final, the national secretariat urged all stakeholders to comply and work collectively toward strengthening the student movement both in Ogun State and across the country.
