In a vibrant display of culture, music and unity, Lagosians from across the state trooped out in large numbers to celebrate this year’s Fanti Carnival, filling the atmosphere with excitement, colour and infectious energy.
The historic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos Island, played host to the annual event, as people from different walks of life gathered to witness and participate in the cultural spectacle. From government representatives and security personnel to tourists and lovers of entertainment, the carnival attracted a diverse crowd united by a shared appreciation for heritage and celebration.

Dressed in elaborate costumes reflecting Afro-Brazilian influences, performers paraded through the venue, blending tradition with contemporary expressions. The rhythm of drums, highlife music and energetic dance performances created an electrifying ambiance that resonated with both young and old attendees.
One of the participants, Oosa Tejumade, expressed her excitement at the event, describing it as a powerful representation of Lagos’ cultural identity. She noted that the carnival goes beyond entertainment, serving as a platform to celebrate tradition and showcase the uniqueness of Afro-Brazilian heritage in the state.
According to her, “The essence of the carnival is to celebrate our culture and tradition. The colours, the costumes, everything reflects who we are as Lagosians, especially our Afro-Brazilian roots.”
Many attendees echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the unifying power of the festival. For Adeola, the experience was both nostalgic and exhilarating, particularly the musical aspect of the event.
“What I love most is the DJ playing highlife music. It brings back memories and keeps everyone dancing. It’s one event where you see people from different backgrounds come together as one,” she said.
Beyond the entertainment, the Fanti Carnival continues to serve as a cultural bridge, fostering unity and reinforcing Lagos’ identity as a melting pot of traditions. As the celebrations unfolded, it became evident that the carnival is not just an event, but a living expression of history, community and shared joy.
