President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday commissioned the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo, describing it as a major economic hub that will accelerate growth, trade, and development in Ogun State and beyond.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tinubu praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he called a “remarkable vision,” noting that the project represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future prosperity.
“Today, we commission a major economic hub in this corridor. The infrastructure we see reflects our confidence in the future of our country,” the President said, adding that such investments are designed to secure long-term economic stability and national growth.
He acknowledged that ongoing macroeconomic reforms may pose challenges but insisted they are already yielding positive results, assuring Nigerians of sustained progress. According to him, the airport project aligns with broader national efforts to improve mobility, strengthen security, and boost agricultural productivity.
Tinubu also highlighted the integration of the airport with other key investments in energy and infrastructure, noting that the combined impact would cut across multiple sectors of the economy.
“We believe that today’s foundation will secure tomorrow’s prosperity. Nigeria is determined to be great, and we are firmly on the path to achieving that greatness,” he said.
In his remarks, Abiodun described the airport as the centerpiece of Ogun State’s economic transformation agenda and a critical component of its emerging aerotropolis.
He said the facility, built from scratch, features a nearly four-kilometre runway capable of handling large aircraft, alongside modern aviation systems and cargo infrastructure.
The governor linked the project to the Federal Government’s economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that policies such as fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification, and improved fiscal management are restoring investor confidence and attracting capital inflows.
“Ogun State today stands as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing economies,” Abiodun said, revealing that the state’s internally generated revenue has grown significantly over the past seven years, while its gross domestic product has expanded substantially.
