Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people, has noted with dismay the recent developments in East London, South Africa, particularly the tensions arising from the said installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo na East London.”
This was made known through a statement made available to newsmen by Dr. Ezechi Chukwu,
National Publicity Secretary,
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
“We express deep concern over the resulting disturbances, condemn the unwarranted attacks on innocent persons and destruction of property and call on relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent further escalation.
“The Igbo people are globally known for their peaceful disposition, enterprise and respect for the laws of host communities. In this regard, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide unequivocally dissociates itself from any action or conduct that contravenes the laws, customs and traditions of the host countries of it’s people.
“We wish to clarify that, to the best of our knowledge, the said installation in East London only amounts to a mere nominal observance since it is not backed by any law.
“However, the Igbo umbrella body, in alignment with the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, does not recognize the conferment of “Eze Ndigbo” title outside Igbo land. Our diaspora communities, for the sake of their internal organisation are once more advised to adopt non-kingship designation such as “Onyendu,” for the avoidance of misrepresentation.
“We urge all Igbo people in the diaspora to continue to conduct themselves with discipline, dignity and full respect for the laws and traditions of their host countries”.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide also called on the Government and people of South Africa to uphold the longstanding spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between both peoples and Nigeria in general.
Ohanaeze appealed for calm, mutual respect, and constructive engagement among all parties.
