There was panic and confusion late Monday night as suspected gunmen attacked off-campus hostels of Ekiti State University (EKSU) students in Ado-Ekiti, forcing many to flee for safety.
Reports had it that the attackers, who were armed, stormed the hostels and moved from one building to another, dispossessing students of valuables, including mobile phones, laptops, and cash.
A student of the institution, identified by the 𝕏 handle @yapperaholicc, confirmed the incident in a post, describing the situation as terrifying and recurring.
In a post made around 3:01 am on Tuesday, the student wrote, “Armed men are attacking students in their hostels in EKSU at midnight!!!!!”
The student added that the attack occurred in the Phase 2 area of the university community, lamenting the disruption to academic activities.
“We are supposed to be reading for our exams!!!!!” the post read.
Raising further concern, the student noted that the attacks had persisted for days.
“It has been going on for three days now!!! They are also robbing us. Please help us repost…” the student added.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the incident, stating that one suspect had been arrested in connection with the attack.
“A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, and he is currently undergoing investigation, while necessary measures have been put in place to forestall recurrence,” Sunday told SaharaReporters.
However, as of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed fatalities from the attack. Also, the exact number of items stolen and their value could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, students of Ekiti State University have called on the state government and security agencies to intensify patrols and improve security around the institution.
They urged authorities to take urgent steps to safeguard lives and property, especially as students prepare for examinations.
