Residents of Bille Community in Rivers State have been reassured by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) following reports of a troubling gas bubbling incident that has raised fears over safety, environmental impact, and public health.
In an official statement, the Commission expressed deep concern over the development, acknowledging the anxiety it has caused among residents.
It emphasized that safeguarding community well-being and protecting the environment remain top priorities for both the regulator and the government.
The NUPRC confirmed that it swiftly activated a coordinated technical investigation in line with regulatory protocols immediately after being notified of the incident. The probe aims to determine the nature and extent of the gas seepage, identify its source, and establish possible causes, while also recommending both immediate and long-term solutions.
Preliminary findings from field observations suggest the gas bubbling may be linked to subsurface geological activity, though officials say multiple factors could be responsible.
Comprehensive geotechnical and geological studies are currently underway to pinpoint the exact cause and guide effective remediation efforts.
The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with key industry stakeholders to ensure accurate, science-based conclusions that support long-term environmental sustainability.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Commission assured residents of Bille that all necessary actions would be taken in accordance with industry regulations and global best practices. It also urged community members to remain calm, adhere strictly to safety guidelines, and follow public health advisories issued by authorities.
The statement was signed by Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Chief Executive of the Commission, who reiterated the agency’s resolve to work diligently with all stakeholders to fully understand and address the incident.
