A fresh political controversy is brewing in Kogi West Senatorial District following allegations that a Local Government Chairman in Okunland has directed newly elected Ward Chairmen to pass a vote of no confidence on Senator Sunday Steve Karimi.
The claim was made by the Media Advocacy Group for Senator Karimi, which stated that it had received reports indicating the council chairman had summoned Ward Chairmen from the 15 wards in the Local Government Area and allegedly instructed them to adopt the motion against the senator.
According to the group, the development became more troubling after one of the Ward Chairmen reportedly disclosed to the senator’s media office that the directive was said to have originated from Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo.
Describing the move as unnecessary political drama, the advocacy group said such actions contradict the long-standing tradition of unity that has characterized politics in the Kogi West region.
The group maintained that the alleged move does not reflect the performance record of Sunday Steve Karimi, whom it said has executed numerous projects and empowerment initiatives across the senatorial district.
“We consider this development a needless political drama that is clearly at variance with the spirit of Kogi West politics, which has always operated as a unified family,” the group said in a statement.
The group further warned that attempts by “certain elements” to create division within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections would not succeed, insisting that the district’s political directive remains focused on development.
It added that residents of the district are politically aware and unlikely to be swayed by what it described as “contrived political theatrics.”
The advocacy group highlighted several intervention programmes and empowerment schemes credited to Senator Karimi, noting that they have benefited youths, women and students throughout the senatorial district.
The statement also called on political actors to concentrate on issues affecting the welfare and development of the people rather than engaging in activities capable of causing internal party rifts.
“As a team, we remain focused on delivering continued progress and strengthening the bond between leadership and the people,” the group said, urging those involved in the alleged plot to redirect their efforts toward public service.
