The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has strengthened its collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to enhance weather monitoring and support livestock farmers across the country.
During a courtesy visit in Abuja, the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Sanusi Abubakar, met with the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, where four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) were officially handed over to the agency.
L-PRES, a national programme designed to improve livestock productivity and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges, is working to equip farmers with the data and tools needed to adapt to changing weather patterns.
Speaking during the visit, Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, describing it as a critical guide for Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He stressed that collaboration with NiMet is key to achieving L-PRES’ mission of building a more climate-resilient livestock industry.
Anosike, in response, commended L-PRES for procuring and donating the AWOS equipment, describing the gesture as a significant boost to Nigeria’s weather observation capacity.
According to him, the systems will be installed in rehabilitated grazing reserves nationwide to provide accurate and localized weather data, enabling livestock farmers to make better management decisions and improve productivity.
Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, noting that improved weather monitoring and shared expertise will help protect Nigeria’s livestock sector from climate risks while supporting farmers’ livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
