President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, bringing his tenure as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police to an end.

According to a statement obtained from his X account, Egbetokun submitted a letter citing pressing family considerations as the reason for his decision to step down.

However, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for his decades of distinguished service, commending his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Recall that Mr. Egbetokun, assumed office in June 2023, leaving the position less than three years into his tenure. His appointment had been earlier extended by legislation, permitting him to complete a full four-year term irrespective of his retirement age, a move that generated debate at the time.

A formal handover ceremony is expected to take place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Following the resignation of Mr. Egbetokun, President Tinubu has also approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olaitan Rilwan Disu, popularly known as Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The President stated that the decision was taken in view of prevailing security challenges and in accordance with extant laws, expressing confidence that Disu’s experience, operational depth, and leadership capacity would provide steady direction for the Force at what he described as a critical time.

Disu assumes leadership at a pivotal moment for the Nigeria Police Force. A career police officer with over three decades of service, he has held several strategic command positions across the country.

He previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, where he oversaw security operations in the nation’s capital, including major political events, protests, and high-profile assignments.

In Rivers State, he managed policing operations in one of Nigeria’s most densely populated regions, confronting entrenched criminal networks and public safety challenges.

He also led the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, where he handled complex investigations, organised crime cases, and inter-agency coordination. His professional background spans criminal investigations, intelligence operations, operational command, and administrative leadership.

In line with the Police Act 2020, the President announced that he will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

Following the Council’s review, his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation, as required under the Constitution.

The confirmation process will involve an assessment of his service record, leadership experience, and plans for the Force.

The leadership transition comes at a time of heightened attention to national security, policing reforms, and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
