Electoral Act Amendment: Reps, Senate move to resolve contentious clauses

Efforts to reform Nigeria’s electoral framework gained traction as the House of Representatives inaugurated a conference committee to harmonise the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.

The move followed a directive from the House leadership and was communicated through an internal memo issued by the Clerk, Yahaya Danzaria.

The House team is chaired by Adebayo Balogun and includes lawmakers drawn from key committees to ensure balance and experience.

Sources said the committee will engage directly with its Senate counterpart to resolve disagreements and produce a unified draft.

A ranking lawmaker said the goal is to strengthen electoral credibility and eliminate ambiguities in the law.

The House reaffirmed that electoral reforms remain vital to transparency and democratic integrity.

On the Senate side, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, had earlier constituted a similar committee chaired by Simon Bako Lalong.

Political observers believe the outcome of the harmonisation process will shape future elections.
