A large number of Lagos State residents on Saturday trooped out in their numbers to Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) to commemorate the cultural heritage of the Eyo Festival, predominantly associated with Isale Eko, Lagos Island.

The colourful event witnessed a massive turnout of celebrants adorned in traditional attire such as damask, sash, kaja, and Aga (Eyo cap) as they marked the return of the Adamu Orisha Play after a long break.

The festival, which had last been celebrated about eight years ago, was received with excitement and joy by residents.

Many of the celebrants expressed happiness over the long-awaited return of the festival, describing it as a significant part of Lagos’ cultural identity.

Some attendees noted that the Eyo Festival represents the true culture and tradition of Lagos State.

One of the participants affirmed that the Orisha Eyo is powerful and spiritual, stating that it offers protection to its followers. He also highlighted the traditional Eyo prayer: “Agogoro Eyo, mo yo fun e, mo yo fun ara mi.”

Another celebrant explained that the various colours and attires displayed during the Eyo procession symbolise unity, beauty, and tranquility among the different Iga Eyo, while also showcasing the richness of Lagos culture.

He listed several Eyo groups, including Eyo Olokun, Eyo Akogun Olofin, Eyo Ipeluwa, Eyo Ogunmade, Eyo Onikoyi, Eyo Aromire, Eyo Sasi, and Eyo Oba Akintoye, among others.

While describing the major Eyo groups: Eyo Adimu, Eyo Alaketepupa (Laba), Eyo Oniko, Eyo Ologede, and Eyo Agere—he acknowledged their spiritual significance and noted that the Orisha Eyo traditionally dislikes smoke and photography.

He therefore warned members of the media to be cautious while covering the procession.

The celebration served as a pure cultural display that highlighted the rich heritage of Lagos State and traced its roots back over 300 years of history.
