Following the charge by the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd). at the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) annual valuers’ assembly, the Chief Executive Director of Fame Oyster & Co has highlighted how land management could curb the rising insecurity in northern Nigeria through efficient land use planning.

The Director of Fame Oyster, Mr Olufemi Oyedele made this known in an exclusive chat while reacting to the state of the nation on the challenges of insecurity especially in the northern part of the country.

Mr Oyedele noted that with rising insecurity, particularly in the northern region requires effective land use planning and modern technology to address the growing threat.

He recommended that improved land administration could play a significant role in reducing criminal hideouts and enhancing community safety, noting that clear mapping of residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and service zones would help government agencies better monitor activities within communities.

He further disclosed that unused or reserved land areas should be protected to prevent illegal occupation emphasising that the protective measures must align with existing safety and human-rights standards.

In addition, technology remains a critical tool in Nigeria’s security architecture. The use of drones, satellite imaging, security cameras and biometric systems, all this would enhance intelligence-gathering operations.

Meanwhile, Oyedele advocates for the use of aerial monitoring systems and advanced sensors that can support early detection of criminal activity, stressing that such tools, if responsibly deployed, could strengthen the government’s ability to track movements in remote and vulnerable areas.

Urging the government to invest in modern equipment and coordinated surveillance systems, noting that a combination of strategic land management and technology-driven solutions could offer sustainable pathways toward reducing insecurity across the country.
