Tension erupted at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Saturday during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash between Katsina United and Barau FC, after violence broke out following an equalising goal by the visiting side.

The encounter, which had been evenly contested, turned chaotic in the 70th minute when Barau FC forward Nana Abraham was viciously attacked by suspected home fans, sustaining a deep cut to his neck.

The incident occurred barely a minute after Orji Kalu scored the crucial 69th-minute equaliser to bring the game level at 1-1, a goal that sparked unrest among sections of the home supporters.

Barau FC confirmed the attack via a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

Just moments earlier, the club had jubilantly shared: “69’ Goal! Orji Kalu levels the scores. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

Shocking images circulating online show Nana Abraham bleeding heavily from a deep neck wound, while teammates and officials rushed to provide first aid as security operatives moved in to restore order.

The match was suspended temporarily as authorities battled to control the situation and ensure the safety of players and officials.

As of press time, the Nigeria Premier Football League Management Committee (NPFLMC) is yet to issue an official statement, but calls are growing for an investigation and stiff sanctions against Katsina United to deter future incidents of football-related violence.
