‘I’ll Probably Cry’: Ronaldo opens up on life after football, love beyond game

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has offered one of his most personal and revealing interviews yet, opening up about Manchester United’s struggles, the nearing end of his remarkable career, and his plans to marry long-time partner Georgina Rodríguez.

In the exclusive sit-down with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, released on Ronaldo’s official YouTube channel, the 39-year-old forward reflected on his journey, from Old Trafford’s glory days to life at Al-Nassr, and on what comes next when the boots finally come off.

“Retirement? It’s close,” Ronaldo admitted with a soft smile. “Will it be difficult? Yes, I’ll probably cry. That’s normal. I’m someone who never hides emotions, I’m honest, I’m human.”

For one of football’s fiercest competitors, that admission carried weight. Ronaldo, who has defined an era with his drive and discipline, said he has been mentally preparing for life after football since his mid-twenties. “I’ve been planning my future for a long time. Still, nothing compares to the thrill of scoring a goal. That feeling, the adrenaline, the roar, you can’t replace it.”

But as his glittering career winds down, family, not fame, appears to be his new focus. The father of five said he’s eager to spend more time watching his children grow. “Bella now counts the days when I’m away. Cristiano Jr. is growing fast, doing the same silly things I used to. Matéo loves football, maybe he’ll follow in my footsteps. I just want to be there for them.”

Ronaldo also shared his admiration for Manchester United, the club that shaped his global rise, even as he lamented its current struggles. “It makes me sad to see what’s happening. Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in world football. It will always have a place in my heart,” he said. “But they need structure, vision, and leadership, that’s the only way back.”

On the club’s new Portuguese manager, Ruben Amorim, Ronaldo was supportive yet realistic. “He’s doing all he can. But no one can perform miracles overnight. Some players lack the right competitive attitude, which must change.”

Still, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains optimistic. “Man United must rediscover its true identity, the spirit of never giving up, the tradition of winning. That’s the real United.”

Away from football, Ronaldo also addressed his relationship with Georgina Rodríguez, hinting at wedding plans that could follow the next World Cup. “We plan to do it after the World Cup,” he revealed with a laugh. “She doesn’t like big events; she prefers something private. What matters most is her happiness.”

The three-part interview, which continues through Friday, is already making waves among fans worldwide, not for controversy, but for its rare glimpse into the vulnerable side of a man long seen as football’s ultimate perfectionist.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be preparing for life beyond the pitch, but as he reflects on his journey, one thing is clear: the passion, pride, and purpose that made him a legend remain as fierce as ever.
