As the Super Falcons prepare for the second leg of their 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has boosted their morale with a donation of ₦50 million and renewed commitment to sports development in the state.
Governor Abiodun announced the gesture when he received the nine time African champions in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, ahead of their crucial qualifier at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.
The Falcons had earlier defeated Benin Republic 2–0 in the first leg on October 24, with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo, and are now looking to complete their qualification on home soil.
Welcoming the team, Governor Abiodun said their return to Ogun State is a validation of his administration’s commitment to developing world-class sports facilities. He announced plans to further transform the MKO Abiola Stadium into a multi purpose sports and entertainment hub with a five star hotel, cinema, and shopping complex.
“Your coming here again shows we are doing something right,” the governor said. “Beyond football, what you represent is leadership, teamwork, and discipline. You inspire millions of young women to believe that what a man can do, a woman can do even better.”
Governor Abiodun commended the team for their consistency and for lifting Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, describing the victory as a moment that “united and uplifted” the entire nation.
“On behalf of the Ogun State Government and our people, I am giving you ₦50 million not just to celebrate your past victory but to motivate you for the task ahead,” he declared. “You can always count on our support here in Ogun State.”
The Super Falcons Head Coach, Justin Madugu, expressed gratitude to the governor for his hospitality and for the modern facilities at the MKO Abiola Stadium, which he described as “one of the best in the country.”
“Each time we play in Abeokuta, we feel at home. The facilities and reception here make our job easier,” Madugu said.
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade also lauded Governor Abiodun for his unwavering support and investment in sports infrastructure, assuring Nigerians that the team remains committed to making the nation proud.
“We’re thankful for your encouragement and the world-class turf you’ve provided. We promise to continue giving our best and putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians,” Ajibade said.
The Super Falcons vowed to reward the governor’s support with another emphatic victory in Tuesday’s match.
