FCT Minister flags off “Light Up Abuja” project, pledges transformation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has on Thursday, flagged off the “Light Up Abuja” project, a transformative initiative aimed at providing integrated hybrid solar lighting across Abuja’s districts and expressways, a according to a press release from Rabi Umar Musa the Assistant Director Press Office of the Minister on the same Thursday.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, Wike disclosed that the project would provide uninterrupted light across the city, improving security and aesthetic appeal. He emphasized the importance of a well-lit Abuja, citing national pride and development, especially as the city approaches its 50th anniversary in February next year.

“We will dramatically transform this city within the next seven months,” Wike said. “Anybody coming to Abuja will not only see good roads but also the entire place lit up.”

The FCT Minister highlighted the project’s features, including a hybrid solar system with surveillance capabilities to prevent vandalism and theft. He noted that the system would enable immediate identification of anyone attempting to damage or steal the facilities.

Wike also revealed that the FCT Administration had taken decisive action to address the recurring problems of darkness and infrastructure sabotage. He stated that the administration had signed agreements with two reputable international firms, Chinese Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) and Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to provide water to satellite towns and light up Abuja.

The Minister warned that the FCT Administration expects backlash from those who benefited from the old corrupt system but remains committed to the nation’s interest. “We have made a decision. This work must be done, and I will do it with the support of Mr. President,” he asserted.

The Acting Executive Secretary, FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, provided an overview of the project, stating that the contract was awarded to Messrs CCECC and CGC Nigeria Limited, with a completion period of six months. The project covers various districts and expressways in Abuja, including Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, and Asokoro.

The Managing Directors of CCECC and CGC Nigeria Ltd pledged to deploy their best resources to deliver a world-class project that will make Abuja shine brighter and set a benchmark for sustainable urban development.
