Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned critics of the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, against dismissing his legacy.
In a post on his official X handle on Monday, Sani said he recently overheard someone harshly criticising Yakubu but stressed that the electoral umpire had presided over polls that produced diverse outcomes across political parties.
“The Prof has conducted elections and handed over Kano to NNPP, Abia to LP, Anambra to APGA, Osun to PDP and Kaduna and Nigeria to APC,” he wrote.
Sani argued that while Yakubu may not have satisfied all expectations, Nigerians should rather pray for a better performance from his successor.
“Don’t exhaust all your anger on Yakubu, pray that his successor do better than him,” he added.
The former lawmaker also reminded Nigerians that history often casts past leaders in a more favourable light.
“Mind you, we live in a World of ‘Good old days,’ where the past is most times better than the present,” he said.
Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman since 2015, is set to bow out after overseeing two general elections and several off-cycle governorship polls.
