Olubadan Coronation: Makinde prioritises Ibadan heritage over personal leave, resume duty

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has demonstrated his commitment to the preservation of Ibadan’s cultural heritage by returning from his annual leave earlier than planned to take charge of preparations for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The Governor, who was initially expected to remain on leave until September 29, notified the Oyo State House of Assembly of his decision to resume duties on Thursday, September 26, ahead of the historic event. The House, presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, formally acknowledged and approved his resumption notice.

Makinde explained in his letter that the coronation of Oba Ladoja, a former governor and respected statesman, was not just a routine ceremony but a culturally defining moment for Ibadan and Yorubaland at large, warranting his personal involvement.

“I shall resume duty tomorrow, 26th September 2025, and hereby assume the full functions of the office of Governor of Oyo State,” his letter partly read.

The Governor also used the opportunity to commend his deputy, Barr. Bayo Lawal, for effectively steering the affairs of the state during his absence. Lawal now reverts to his role as Deputy Governor.

Lawmakers in attendance lauded Makinde’s action as a mark of respect for Ibadan’s tradition and a signal of his administration’s recognition of traditional institutions. They unanimously adopted his resumption notice and pledged continued legislative backing for the Executive to ensure a successful coronation.

The Olubadan stool, revered as one of the most respected traditional thrones in Nigeria, has long been central to Ibadan’s cultural identity. With Oba Ladoja’s coronation now only hours away, all eyes are on Ibadan as the city prepares to witness a historic transition steeped in heritage and symbolism.
