Erik ten Hag’s Leverkusen reign ends abruptly after just two Bundesliga games

Bayer Leverkusen have cut ties with Erik ten Hag just weeks into his tenure, ending his spell after only two Bundesliga fixtures, the fastest managerial dismissal in the league’s history.
Ten Hag, who officially took over on July 1 following his departure from Manchester United in late 2024, was handed a two-year deal to lead the club through a major transition. However, a disappointing start, a 2-1 loss to Hoffenheim and a 3-3 draw with 10-man Werder Bremen despite twice leading, has triggered swift action from the Leverkusen hierarchy.
“This was not the outcome anyone wanted,” said managing director Simon Rolfes. “But it’s become clear over the past few weeks that the current direction wasn’t sustainable for building a successful future.”
Club CEO Fernando Carro echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the harsh timing but defending the decision: “Making such a change so early is difficult, but we must ensure optimal conditions if we’re to meet our objectives this season.”
The club had just come off a historic campaign under Xabi Alonso in 2023/24, claiming a domestic double while going unbeaten. However, the summer saw a sweeping squad overhaul, with stars like Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli, and captain Lukas Hradecky all leaving.
Tasked with rebuilding the squad almost from scratch, Ten Hag’s attempt to establish stability and momentum fell short. His brief spell included just one competitive win — a German Cup victory over Sonnenhof Grossaspach.
Leverkusen now begin the search for a new head coach as they aim to steady the ship after an unexpectedly turbulent start to their campaign.
