Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has paid glowing tribute to the late Dr. Doyin Abiola, describing her as a trailblazing journalist and a resilient advocate for democracy whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

Dr. Abiola, the widow of the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82. She was the former Managing Director of the National Concord newspaper and a respected voice in Nigeria’s media and political spheres.

In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, Governor Abiodun said the death of Dr. Abiola marked the end of an era defined by courage, intellect, and service to nationhood.

“Dr. Doyin Abiola was not only a devoted wife to the late Chief MKO Abiola, but a formidable force in her own right,” the governor noted. “Her pioneering role in journalism and her courageous stance during Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance have left an indelible mark on our national history.”

He recalled her early career with the Daily Sketch and Daily Times before ascending to become the Managing Director of Concord Newspapers, where she became a beacon of leadership and integrity.

“Her tenure at the Concord Group of Newspapers, particularly during the turbulent June 12 period, showcased her bravery and steadfast commitment to the truth and democratic values,” Abiodun stated.

The governor emphasized that Dr. Abiola’s advocacy for justice and democracy, especially at a time of political upheaval, demonstrated the strength of her convictions and her deep love for Nigeria.

“She stood shoulder to shoulder with her husband during one of Nigeria’s darkest political periods, offering strength, wisdom, and unflinching support,” he said. “Her sacrifices will forever be remembered as a testament to her patriotism and resilience.”

Abiodun extended heartfelt condolences to the Abiola family and all who were touched by Dr. Abiola’s life and work.

“Her passing is a great loss, but her legacy lives on through her contributions to journalism, democracy, and national development. May her soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
