Nigeria, Benin deepen economic ties with landmark agreement

In a significant step towards regional integration, Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have endorsed a Framework for Enhanced Economic Cooperation, signaling a deepened partnership and shared commitment to prosperity. The agreement was reached on August 2, 2025, in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, between senior representatives of both governments, according to a press statement from Dr Adebayo Thomas Director Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment on Sunday.

The framework is structured around four thematic pillars of enhancing trade in goods between Nigeria and Benin
Trade in Services & Private Sector Engagement, promoting private sector growth and cooperation, streamlining customs procedures to facilitate trade and addressing legal and institutional challenges to integration

The Nigerian delegation was led by Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and included the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu;
Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Nura Rimi

The Beninese delegation was headed by Senior Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Romuald Wadagni; Minister of Justice and Legislation, Mr. Yvon Detchénou; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Olushegun Adjadi Bakari; Minister of Industry and Trade, Mrs. Shadiya Alimatou Assouman.

Text drafting for the Memorandum of Understanding is set to begin in Q4 2025, with conclusion targeted by Q1 2026. This agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral trade, enhance cross-border cooperation, and promote regional integration, ultimately contributing to shared prosperity for both nations.
