Abiodun unveils upgraded Olumo Rock Tourist Complex, announces free entry till september

In a renewed effort to promote tourism and cultural heritage in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has commissioned the newly renovated Olumo Rock Tourist Complex in Abeokuta, announcing that entrance to the iconic site will be free until the end of September.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, Governor Abiodun said the initiative aims to encourage greater public interest in tourism and foster appreciation for the state’s rich cultural traditions.
The revamped complex now boasts a modern galleria featuring portraits of notable Nigerians, a gazebo, restaurants offering local and international cuisine, shops for adire fabric, and a reliable power supply supporting new elevators and other amenities.
Describing Olumo Rock as a symbol of resilience and identity, the governor noted:
“Olumo Rock is more than just an ancient formation it is a historical sanctuary and a proud emblem of Egba heritage. This renovation is about more than just physical upgrades; it’s about rekindling pride, preserving memory, and strengthening our cultural identity.”
Governor Abiodun emphasized the role of tourism as a key driver of economic growth under the ISEYA development agenda. He noted that a well-developed tourism sector could boost the state’s economy, create jobs, attract investment, and enhance cultural understanding.
Declaring Ogun as a prime tourism destination, the governor called on both local and international tourists to explore the state’s rich offerings.
“Olumo Rock has been transformed into a modern heritage site. It is now equipped with world-class facilities, including a vibrant arts gallery and restaurants. We’ve also designated zones for artisans and creatives to thrive, creating opportunities for youth empowerment and local commerce.”
Highlighting the social and spiritual relevance of Olumo Rock, Abiodun added:
“This site is a reminder of our strength, courage, and unity as a people. It spiritually connects us to our ancestors and invites the world to experience our heritage.”
He disclosed that the complex will soon be concessioned to a reputable operator to ensure its sustainability and proper management.
Welcoming guests, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, lauded the governor’s commitment to revamping the state’s cultural assets, stating that the facelift will attract more visitors and elevate Ogun’s status in the tourism sector.
Also speaking, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, reflected on the historical importance of the rock as a wartime refuge and spiritual haven, expressing gratitude to the governor for preserving its legacy.
Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, CEO of Nike Arts Gallery, praised the upgrade and expressed optimism that the complex would soon become a leading tourist destination in Nigeria.
“We’ll bring in art lovers and museum experts from around the world. This transformation will create jobs, promote cultural exchange, and open up new economic opportunities. In two years, Olumo Rock will be the number one cultural site in the country.”
