SON partners CICAN to enhance industrial compliance, consumer protection

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has pledged a note of partnership with the Commerce and Industrial Correspondent Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in ensuring a standardisation of industrial compliance on all imported and locally manufactured products with a high consumer protection
The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) noted this pledge during one day capacity building workshop training for Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) hosted at SON complex in Lagos, which was designed to equipped these media moguls with first-hand knowledge and information about SON’s services, mandates, and achievement.
The Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso, in his welcome address noted that this collaboration is essential and crucial between SON and the media in other to promote quality assurance and industrial development in Nigeria by getting the message well documented to the tom, dick and harry of the citizenry on need for quality product usage.
SON which is known for product standardization, the DG who was represented by Mrs Talatu Ettan highlighted SON’s mandate to drive industrialization by facilitating trade and ensuring compliance with minimum requirements of Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) which SON alone cannot achieve but requires the support of stakeholders like CICAN.
The workshop which featured multiple presentations on various aspects of SON’s activities, including laboratory services, food safety, SON calibration service, electrical-electronics, MANCAP and SONCAP, and more where all encompasses noteworthy and lucid presentation.
Meanwhile, Dr Samuel Ayuba during his presentation on the need for measuring calibration emphasis said that calibration is a crucial process that ensures the accuracy and reliability of measurements, with goal of having a significant and quality goods and services.
He noted that directorate of metrology, under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), plays a vital role in providing calibration services to industries and stakeholders, operating on advanced calibration facilities, including pressure, mass and balance, and flow laboratories. These facilities provide accurate and reliable calibration services to various sectors, including oil and gas, and manufacturing sector ensuring that measurements are traceable to international systems of units, promoting fairness and transparency in trade and commerce.
However, the Director of Laboratory Services, David Ikenabena, expressed his delight in hosting the workshop and emphasised the importance of partnership between SON and the media which he refers to as an eye opener for the citizenry through the media providing a platform for SON to showcase its services and feedback response.
Also, the President of CICAN, Mr Charles Okoji appreciated SON’s efforts in promoting quality assurance and industrial development. He noted that the partnership between CICAN and SON has been fruitful over the years and urged SON and CICAN member to keep flying the pledge.
The capacity building was concluded with a call for continued partnership between SON and CICAN with their commitment to working together will promote quality assurance and industrial development in Nigeria.
