The Anambra State Town’s People Association (ASTPA) in Abuja has hailed the Senate’s decision to recommend immortalizing its illustrious son, the late Rt: Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives. Anaekwe, who passed away on July 6, 2025, at the age of 69, is remembered for his exemplary leadership and contributions to Nigerian governance.

The President General (PG), ASTPA, Sir Arinze Anadu, addressed journalists over the weekend on that effect on behalf of the Association in his office in the nation’s capital.

Chief Anadu (Nwachinemelu), while describing the late Anaekwe’s leadership style as selfless and worthy of emulation by today’s leaders, Chief Anadu (Nwachinemelu) observed that the late former speaker’s principled leadership and courageous stance against anti-democratic forces are qualities that can strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

On Thursday at the plenary, Senator Victor Umeh, who represents the late speaker’s Anambra Central Senatorial District at the Senate sponsored a motion which was co sponsored by Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Izunaso, Muhammad Monguno and Kamorudeen Kolawale.

However, in line with the motion, the Senate decided to, among others, recommend the late Anaekwe’s immortalization and paid tribute to his legacy and contributions to Nigerian governance. To this, the Senate, however, urged the Federal Government to name a national institution or public edifice after Anaekwe, in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation.

The ASTPA extended condolences to Anaekwe’s family, his community, Adazi Ani, the people of Anambra State, Igbo nation, and Nigeria in general. They described Anaekwe as a mentor to many leaders, a recipient of national honors, and an exemplary son of Anambra State and Nigeria.

The Senate’s decision to immortalize Anaekwe is a testament to his enduring impact on Nigerian governance. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens.
