A high-level symposium bringing together media professionals, corporate stakeholders, academics, and development experts held on Friday at Nissi Hall, Eden Hotels, Eket, with participants emphasizing the critical role of communication and corporate governance in driving socio-economic development in Akwa Ibom State.

The event, themed “Communication Dynamics and Corporate Governance in Akwa Ibom State”, featured a sub-theme focused on “Appraising the Impact of CSR of Oil and Gas Companies on Akwa Ibom’s Development.” It was convened by the Association of Eket Senatorial District Media Professionals.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Moffat Ekoriko, Publisher of NewsAfrica (London), highlighted the media’s responsibility in fostering transparency and ethical corporate behavior, particularly in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

In a presentation titled “Beyond the Headlines,” Mr. Ogechukwu Udeagha, General Manager, Public and Government Affairs at Seplat Energy, underscored the need for responsible media engagement to build trust and ensure corporate accountability.

Renowned scholars from the University of Uyo provided research-backed perspectives. Professor Herbert Batta critiqued the disconnect between corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and their actual impact on host communities, while Professor Peter Esuh called for more independent journalism, arguing that “surveillance journalism” is key to strengthening governance in the state.

Stakeholders from across government, civil society, and the private sector agreed on the need for transparent CSR implementation, continuous dialogue between oil companies and host communities, and more strategic communication efforts.

A consensus emerged that the media must transition from passive reporting to active advocacy for development.

In his welcome remarks, Elder Edet Okpo, Chairman of the Association, said the organization, which comprises over 400 media professionals and scholars—is committed to promoting transparency and development through responsible journalism. He spotlighted the Association’s publication, The Scorecard Magazine, and past documentary initiatives that have supported governance and civic education.

Okpo praised Seplat Energy’s sustained community engagement, lauded the planning committee led by Dr. (Mrs.) Idongesit Ashameri, and acknowledged Dr. Essien Ndueso, Chairman of the Association’s Board of Trustees and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, for his unwavering support.

He also expressed admiration for Governor Umo Eno’s infrastructure and civil service reforms, affirming the Association’s commitment to supporting the administration’s Arise Agenda.

Speaking further, Dr. Essien Ndueso urged media practitioners to move beyond traditional roles. “The journalist is not merely a gatekeeper, but a kingmaker, conscience stirrer, and builder of society,” he said, calling for a media “rebirth” anchored in innovation and self-development.

Dr. Ndueso also praised Senator Ekong Sampson for facilitating training opportunities for journalists outside the state, describing such efforts as vital for professional growth in a fast-evolving media industry.

The event culminated in a joint resolution to reaffirm the media’s commitment to inclusive, transparent, and sustainable development in Akwa Ibom. A key highlight was the presentation of awards to 17 individuals recognized for their outstanding contributions to media excellence and community advancement.
