Aftermath of the recent tragic murder of a 300-level student by alleged phone snatchers off-campus, Niger State Government has pledged maximum security for students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Lapai.
This was reviewed at the end of an emergency security meeting where the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hamidu Mu’azu Jantabo, expressed condolences.
He urged students to avoid peaceful protests and destruction of property, warning that such actions could lead to prosecution under the new penal code.
Key measures announced include:
—Deployment of over 200 trained local vigilantes for patrols.
—Establishment of approved security checkpoints.
—Stricter landlord regulations to ensure secure student accommodations.
—Collaboration with the Niger State Urban Development Board to address unapproved lodges.
—Immediate provision of a new transformer to fix power issues.
—Logistical support like motorcycles for security patrols.
—Coordinated patrols and student security committees as alternatives to permanent outposts.
—Mandatory student ID cards and recruitment of additional vigilantes.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, urged students to be vigilant, know their neighbors, and report suspicious activities.
He emphasized shared security responsibility just as he met with the Lapai Emirate Council to strengthen community-based security.
Stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and student representatives, are committed to swift actions to restore safety and trust. Prayers were offered for the deceased and the family of the departed.
