Tragic Attack In Lagos: lesbian couple, others brutally murdered

A gruesome attack occurred on July 17, 2024, at 17, Awolowo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos, leaving three people dead, including a lesbian couple’s partner, Debi Ogundare, a young boy, Nnamadim Ikeneje and a security guard James. The attack was reportedly sparked by the couple’s relationship.
According to eyewitnesses, angry mobs and touts descended upon the home, brutally murdering Debi, Nnamadim, and the security guard. A chilling note left on Debi’s body read, “NO SODOM AND GOMORRAH IN OUR LAND.” The mob shouted “Sodom and Gomorrah” as they attacked.
The incident has its roots in a previous encounter with law enforcement. The police had arrested the couple in the past on suspicion of being lesbians, but they were later bailed out due to lack of evidence.
Despite this, the mobs have refused to let go, insisting that the couple must be punished. Nigeria’s strict laws against same-sex relationships have created a challenging environment for individuals in these relationships, leaving them vulnerable to violence, harassment, and persecution. This incident highlights the dangers and risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria.
The homeowner, Mrs. Chinyere, was reportedly not at home during the attack and is said to be on the run. The mobs allegedly vowed to track her down, threatening to use her blood to “cleanse the land.” They also targeted Mrs. Chinyere’s husband, accusing him of covering up for her and not surrendering her to be “dealt with.” The incident has raised concerns about violence, vigilantism, and the lack of protection for vulnerable individuals.
Authorities are urged to investigate and ensure justice is served, while also addressing the underlying issues that lead to such attacks. Mrs Ikeneje was apprehended on May 5, 2025, in Kanu by the Emirs and faces trial, potentially facing death if found guilty.
The police requested her release to face 14 years imprisonment, but the Emirs insisted on handling it themselves. Her husband, Mr. Ikeneje, also faces persecution for allegedly aiding same-sex relationships.”
