A Ghanaian Minister of Science and Environment (MEST), Dr. Murtala Muhammed, has issued a rallying cry, stating that Nigeria, regarded as the “giant of Africa,” is currently asleep, but its awakening will have a profound impact on the entire continent.

The minister made this statement today, March 20, 2025, in Abuja at the official launch of the Sankore Project, sponsored by UK International Development. The initiative aims to strengthen UK-West Africa Science and Innovation Partnerships for sustainable development, with Nigeria and Ghana as the pilot countries in Africa.

In his welcome address, Dr. Muhammed stated: “Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, is sleeping. If Nigeria wakes up today, the entire Africa will wake up.”
His statement underscores the belief that Nigeria’s vast potential, driven by its large population, abundant natural resources, and strategic location, can be a catalyst for Africa’s growth and development.

The minister’s remarks highlight Nigeria’s influence beyond its borders, emphasizing that its progress can have far-reaching consequences for the entire African continent. With its rich cultural heritage, vibrant economy, and resilient people, Nigeria is well-positioned to play a leading role in shaping Africa’s future.

As the continent’s most populous country, Nigeria’s development is intricately linked to Africa’s overall prosperity. The minister’s call to action stresses the significance of Nigeria’s transformation, not just for its own citizens, but for the entire region.

The Sankore Project, officially launched on March 20, 2025, at Abuja Continental Hotels, Abuja, was co-funded with £1.9 million by UNESCO, UK International Development, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and Results for Development (R4D).

The project’s objectives focus on facilitating collaborative, innovative solutions between Nigeria, Ghana, and other West African nations.

The symbolic launch of the Sankore Project and the unveiling of its project kakemono were carried out by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, alongside Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, as well as key representatives from ISDU.

The event was attended by: The Ghana High Commission, Susan Mshana, Deputy Development Director and Head, Integrated Strategy and Delivery Unit, British High Commission, Hon. Dr. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), Ghana, Hon. Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology (FMIST), Nigeria, Chisom Udemezu, Technology and Innovation Adviser, West Africa – FCDO, Moma UNESCO, ACET Rob Floyd, R4D Tom Feeny, Kornelia Tzinova.

The event marked a crucial step towards fostering stronger partnerships in science and innovation between Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK, with the aim of driving sustainable development across Africa.
