The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment to paying fair compensation to all owners of recently demolished structures along the Arterial Road N16 in Gishiri community, Abuja, according to a statement from the Director of Press, Office of the Minister, Anthony Ogunleye Tuesday.

During a meeting with affected residents, the Minister emphasized that the demolition exercise was carried out in the interest of public good, aiming to enhance Abuja’s status as a world-class city. He stressed that the project is not for personal gain but for the overall development of the FCT.

The Minister revealed that the initial compensation budget of N655 million was increased to N1.3 billion to mitigate economic hardship. He ensured that compensation rates were determined by government valuation standards, ensuring fairness and transparency.

Barr. Wike strongly opposed any segregation in compensation payments, particularly between indigenous and non-indigenous residents. “If I have a property and the road is passing there, why will you not pay me my money? Why will you say I am non-indigene? Where does it work?” he asserted.

The Minister directed officials to ensure all eligible owners receive full compensation and a warning against malpractice. He also cautioned traditional rulers against issuing threats or disrupting peace.

The FCT Administration demonstrated inclusivity by appointing indigenous residents to key positions. The Minister urged stakeholders to cooperate, ensuring the successful completion of the Arterial Road N16 project.

Affected residents expressed concerns about the relocation site, describing it as a swampy area. The Minister promised to visit the site and address the issue.
