Nigeria, EU set to deepen ties on security, border control, digital innovation

Nigeria and the European Union (EU) are exploring stronger collaboration in peace, security, and defence, as both entities seek to address mutual challenges and seize emerging opportunities.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing internal security through a multi-pronged approach, including identity management, border security, visa modernization, and document authentication. Speaking during a high-level meeting with the Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, in Abuja, the Minister outlined major reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the Ministry’s effort to decentralize identity management, making it more accessible, particularly for rural populations. He also revealed that Nigeria has successfully covered 60% of its land borders with an e-border system and is working towards full automation to enhance national security.

As part of efforts to boost ease of travel and investment, the Minister announced the introduction of an e-visa system, allowing applicants to process visas online and receive approvals via email, eliminating the need for physical visits to embassies. Additionally, he introduced the Centralized Citizens Integrity and Document Authentication System (CCIDAS), designed to curb document fraud and simplify the authentication of Nigerian documents abroad.

Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to deepening ties with Nigeria, citing recent discussions with President Bola Tinubu on advancing cooperation in critical areas such as security, migration, and defence. He noted that Nigeria remains a strategic partner in Africa, with the EU eager to build a more dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship.

“As the world rapidly evolves, the EU and Nigeria must work together to tackle global security concerns while fostering economic and diplomatic opportunities,” Mignot stated.

The discussions mark a new chapter in Nigeria-EU relations, setting the stage for enhanced security collaboration and digital governance reforms that will strengthen Nigeria’s position on the global stage.
