Goodluck E. Adubazi, Abuja.

A two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria was held from January 27-28, 2025, at Abuja Continental Hotels. The conference, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Governance and Political Integrity,” aimed to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy. Organized by the Africa Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development, in collaboration with PAACA, Centre for Democracy and Development, WFD, and National Peace Committee, the conference brought together current and past governors, vice presidents, top government officials, and key industry players.

The conference resolved that a collective movement is necessary to restore the confidence of the masses in Nigeria’s democracy. Key resolutions included electoral process reforms, enhanced accountability and transparency, and ensuring the credibility of election outcomes. The conference also identified the need for a movement to strengthen democracy, with each category of persons having a role to play.

Several issues threatening Nigeria’s democracy were discussed, including “meals overvotes” and the morality deficits of the current generation of youths. The conference aimed to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by addressing these issues and finding solutions to restore the Nigerian people’s confidence.

The conference’s communique, read by PAACA Executive Director Mr. Ezenwa Nwagwu, highlighted the importance of collective action in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. The conference provided a platform for stakeholders to come together and work towards a common goal of strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
