Akwa Ibom Police to strictly enforce third-party vehicle insurance from February 1

By Theresa Donatus, Uyo.

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has reaffirmed the commitment to enforce the mandatory third-party vehicle insurance from February 1, 2025, as directed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, CP Azare, alongside other key stakeholders, urged motorists to take advantage of the remaining time to secure valid third-party insurance for their vehicles.

He warned that from February 1, any vehicle found without proper insurance documentation would be impounded, with recovery contingent upon presenting the required documents within a specified period.

“This enforcement is part of our efforts to safeguard road users, ensure accountability, and promote adherence to traffic regulations,” Azare stated. He further emphasized that police officers would be dispatched across all local government areas in the state to monitor and enforce compliance.

The CP clarified that third-party vehicle insurance is a long-standing requirement and not a new policy. “It’s something that should already be part of your vehicle’s documentation. We are simply reminding vehicle owners of their responsibility to ensure they have it,” he said.

Azare also warned against the use of counterfeit insurance documents, stating that anyone found with fake papers will be asked to provide the source of issuance for verification.

Edward Odiete, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, urged road users to update their vehicle documents, particularly insurance, to avoid complications during enforcement. He emphasized that such documents are crucial for smooth road operations and compliance with the law.

Mr. Okon Okon, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, praised the police for their proactive stance, highlighting that third-party insurance is a fundamental legal requirement for all vehicles. He urged vehicle owners to update their insurance promptly to avoid unnecessary inconveniences.

In support of the enforcement, Mr. Sunny James, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Akwa Ibom, expressed gratitude for the police’s initiative, urging the public to renew their vehicle particulars before the grace period expires.

Meanwhile, David Okon, Deputy State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, supported the initiative but appealed for an extension of the deadline to ensure a smooth transition and full compliance.

As the February 1 deadline approaches, stakeholders are calling on motorists to act quickly and avoid penalties by ensuring their vehicles are fully insured and compliant with the law.
