The EMOIMEE Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) in Mkpat Enin has received overwhelming accolades from stakeholders for its dedication to transparency, accountability, and regular engagement with the community.

This positive feedback came during a crucial stakeholder meeting that took place yesterday at the palace of HRM Edidem Akpan Akpan Ekpene, the Paramount Ruler of Mkpat Enin.

Engr. Sunny Udo, the representative of the Board of Trustees, led the EMOIMEE management committee, which was commended for its efforts in ensuring open communication and inclusivity in the program.

In his opening remarks, HRM Edidem Akpan Akpan Ekpene applauded the committee for prioritizing community wellbeing and emphasized that these practices are vital for building trust and ensuring the program’s continued success.

However, the Paramount Ruler also voiced concerns about the composition of the Mkpat Enin EMOIMEE monitoring committee, established by the Local Government Authority. He criticized the committee for being overly politicized and not adhering to the framework set out by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

HRM Ekpene urged that traditional leadership, rather than political figures, take the lead in decisions relating to the initiative, stressing that the program is community-based and should remain free from political influence.

Responding, Engr. Sunny Udo provided an overview of the EMOIMEE program and highlighted its role in driving development in Mkpat Enin through the PIA.

He said that the program’s potential was to create lasting positive change, particularly through human capacity development and infrastructure growth in oil-impacted areas. “This initiative is a beacon of hope for our communities,” Engr. Udo said, emphasizing its ability to address long-standing challenges faced by the region.

On his part, Rev. Obot Ekanem, a member of the management committee, presented key achievements of the program, such as scholarship schemes, youth empowerment projects, and medical outreach initiatives.

He reassured the audience that the committee remains committed to ensuring equitable distribution of benefits and urged community leaders to ensure that no family is left behind, also addressed concerns about financial misconduct, stressing that the program’s strict operational framework and oversight minimize the risk of malfeasance.

In addition, Comrade Innocent Idem, an advisory member of the Board, encouraged the people of Mkpat Enin to take full advantage of the opportunities available through the PIA.

He also recommended that the Local Government Council establish a technical committee to engage other settlers operating in the area, aiming to broaden the scope of the Host Community Development Trust.

The meeting also featured strong contributions from other stakeholders, including clan heads, political figures, and youth leaders. Mr. Utitofon Jeremiah, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Mkpat Enin, thanked the committee for maintaining an apolitical stance but criticized the political nature of the Local Government’s monitoring committee. He warned against political interference that could derail the objectives of the PIA.

In response, Hon. Emmanuel Inyang, Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government, represented by Dr. Imowo Udobia, acknowledged the historical struggle for development in the oil-producing region and pledged the full support of the local government to the EMOIMEE initiative. He commended the passage of the PIA, which led to the establishment of the EMOIMEE program, and reiterated the local government’s commitment to supporting its objectives.

The forum concluded with a renewed sense of unity and commitment from all stakeholders, who pledged to work together to maximize the benefits of the EMOIMEE program.

The management committee emphasized that regular communication and stakeholder engagement would remain a cornerstone of their approach as they continue to drive development in Mkpat Enin.
